You'll notice we're making two big changes to Demosplash in 2024.

In short: Admission will still be free for Carnegie Mellon students, faculty, and staff.

Snacks will still be provided but, instead of serving full catered meals on-site, we're encouraging attendees to explore the local restaurant and delivery options, try nearby on-campus dining options, or pack a meal.

Why did we decide to make this change? Finding quality catered food in the quantities our event needs has become exponentially more difficult and time-consuming since 2020. Some of the restaurants we'd had good luck with in the past have gone out of business; others don't take catering orders, ghost us, or have substantially increased prices. Further, having to pick up the meals, serve them, and clean up afterward collectively took a lot of time away from our already busy volunteer organizing staff, which we feel is effort better spent elsewhere.

Additionally, for 2024, all ticket sales will be cash only and at the door due to vendor issues currently preventing our use of online pre-registration. We do not expect this to be permanent and will continue looking into alternatives for the future.

Why charge at all? While food had been our largest expense over the last several years, the rest of the event still costs money to run. Revenue from ticket and T-shirt sales helps fund the prize pool for our compos as well as other incidental expenses. While we recognize cash-only sales may cause some inconvenience, ATMs from both PNC Bank and Citizens Bank are conveniently located on the first floor of the venue.
